What is graphene coating?
Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms, famous in labs for its strength and its ability to conduct heat. In car-care products, it appears in much more modest form. A small amount of graphene oxide, or a related graphene material, is mixed into a coating resin, usually the same silica or polysiloxane chemistry used in ceramic coatings. So a graphene coating is best understood as a ceramic coating with an extra ingredient.
How much graphene a product contains, and in what form, varies from brand to brand. Even Garware’s own detailing blog makes the point that the word “graphene” on a label does not, by itself, prove performance. We judge a product by how it behaves on paint, not by the name on the bottle.
What do the makers claim?
These are claims made by coating makers and sellers. They are not results we have measured ourselves:
- Fewer water spots. Water is said to bead tighter and slide off sooner, so less of it dries on the paint.
- Better heat handling. Graphene’s thermal conductivity is said to spread heat across the panel and lower surface temperature.
- A slicker surface. Some makers also claim less dust cling.
- Longer life than a comparable ceramic coating.
Independent long-term testing of these claims is still limited. What is well established is that a graphene coating is applied, cured and maintained almost exactly like a ceramic one. On a Pune car parked outdoors, the prep underneath and your washing habits will decide more than the label.
Graphene vs ceramic: what’s proven and what’s claimed
| Feature | Ceramic (SiO2) coating | Graphene coating |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Silica (SiO2) resin | Ceramic-type resin with graphene oxide added |
| Prep needed | Decontamination and paint correction | The same |
| Application and cure | Panel by panel; cures over days | Nearly identical |
| Water behaviour | Strong beading | Strong beading; makers claim fewer water spots |
| Heat | No special claim | Makers claim better heat spread; little independent data |
| Scratch-proof? | No | No |
| Stone chips | No (that’s PPF) | No (that’s PPF) |
| Price | Lower for a given grade | Usually higher for a comparable grade |

Who should choose graphene coating?
- Dark cars in open parking. Black and dark grey paint shows water spots and swirls first, and a summer in the open is hard on any finish. The dark Mahindra Scorpio N in our recent graphene reel is a typical candidate.
- Owners who wash at home with borewell or tanker water, where spotting is the everyday problem.
- Enthusiasts who want the slickest finish and are happy to pay a little more for a claimed edge.
If budget matters more, a properly prepared ceramic coating gives you most of the same everyday benefit. If stone chips are the worry, no coating will help; that is a job for paint protection film, and a coating can go on top of the film.
Why does prep matter more on a dark car?
A coating, graphene or not, adds gloss on top of whatever is underneath. On dark paint that makes leftover flaws easier to see, not harder: holograms from careless polishing, swirls nobody corrected, and high spots where the coating wasn’t levelled. That’s why our process starts with a long look at the paint under the PinkStudio’s LED ceiling and ends with every panel checked under the same light.
What should you ask before buying any graphene coating?
Whoever does the job, these five questions separate a real product from a label:
- Which exact product is it, and can I see its data sheet?
- Is paint correction included, and to what level?
- How long does it need to cure before the first wash?
- What does the maker’s warranty require from me, such as check-ups or approved shampoos?
- What happens if a panel fails early?
Ask us all five before we start, and expect straight answers.
What does graphene coating cost in Pune?
There’s no single price, because “graphene coating” covers everything from budget bottles to premium multi-year grades. The two things that move the number most are the product grade and the hours of paint correction your car needs. Our ceramic coating price guide for Pune shows typical market ranges for coatings. Message us your model and colour, and we can quote both a graphene and a ceramic option so you can compare.
