Headlight and alloy wheel restoration in Pune, plus windshield coating

Headlight restoration sands away the yellowed, oxidised outer layer of a plastic headlight, polishes the lens clear and seals it with a UV-protective coat. Alloy restoration repairs kerb rash, corrosion and peeling finish. Both suit cars about five years or older, or any car with scraped wheels. A pair of headlights typically takes 2–3 hours at our PinkStudio in Mangalwar Peth, Pune.

Why it’s worth it

  • 01

See and be seen at night

In AAA's 2018 tests, badly yellowed lenses gave only 22% of a new lamp's low-beam light. Professional restoration brought that back to about 73%.

  • 02

    Sealed, not just polished

A polish-only job can haze again within months in the sun. The UV-protective coat is what keeps a restored lens clear.

  • 03

    Wheels that match the car

Kerb rash, corrosion and peeling lacquer are refinished, so the wheels look right every day and when you sell.

  • 04

    Clearer glass in the rain

Add a windshield coating and monsoon rain beads into droplets that the airflow pushes off the glass, so the wipers have less to do.

Why do headlights turn yellow and foggy?

Modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate, a tough plastic that needs protection from sunlight. From the factory, each lens carries a thin UV-resistant hard coat. Years of sun and road grit wear that coat away, and then the plastic itself oxidises. It goes yellow, then cloudy, then chalky. AAA’s 2018 research found lenses start to show this at around five years, give or take two. It also named ultraviolet exposure and abrasion by road grit as the main causes.

Pune gives lenses plenty of both: strong summer sun, open parking and dusty roads. The result isn’t just cosmetic. A yellow lens scatters and blocks light, so your low beam reaches less of the road just when you need it on an unlit stretch.

How does headlight restoration work?

A proper restoration removes the damaged layer and then replaces the protection:

  1. Mask the paint and trim around the lamp.
  2. Wet-sand the oxidised surface with progressively finer abrasives until the lens is evenly matt and the yellow is gone.
  3. Polish by machine until the lens is clear again.
  4. Seal with a UV-protective coat, because bare polycarbonate starts yellowing again quickly.

The last step is the one that separates a lasting job from a roadside polish. A pair typically takes 2–3 hours, and we confirm the time when you book. If you want extra insurance, clear PPF on the headlights adds a sacrificial, self-healing layer against stone chips and grit.

Restore or replace your headlights?

ConditionRestoreReplace
Yellowing or haze on the outsideYesNot needed
Fine surface scratchesYesNot needed
Moisture or fog inside the lampNo; needs resealing or replacementOften
Burnt, peeling or dull reflectorNoYes
Cracked or deeply crazed lensNoYes

If you’re also thinking about brighter lights, restore the lens first. A clear lens makes any bulb work better. See LED headlights for upgrades with a road-appropriate white beam, aimed after fitting so oncoming drivers aren’t dazzled.

How do you restore kerb-rashed alloy wheels?

Peth lanes are narrow, kerbs are high and parallel parking is tight, so alloy wheels in central Pune take a beating. Kerb rash, corrosion creeping under the lacquer, and peeling or flaking finish are all cosmetic damage, and they can be put right.

The usual sequence:

  • Clean and degrease the wheel.
  • Sand out the damage and fill any gouges.
  • Prime, apply colour matched to the original, and finish with a clear coat for gloss and protection.

First, though, we check every wheel for bends and cracks. A refinish makes a wheel look right; it doesn’t make a damaged wheel safe. A set typically takes 1–3 days depending on damage and finish, and we confirm the time when you book.

Paint, powder coat or diamond cut: which alloy finish?

FinishHow it’s doneStrengthsTrade-offs
Paint (primer, colour, clear)Sprayed and curedEasy colour-matching, suits smaller repairsLess chip-resistant than powder
Powder coatDry powder applied, then baked in an ovenThick, tough, durable finishTyre off, full strip, harder to match an exact factory shade
Diamond cut (two-tone)Face re-machined on a CNC lathe, then lacqueredFactory-bright machined lookRemoves metal each time, so it can only be repeated a limited number of times

Many popular SUVs and hatchbacks come with diamond-cut two-tone alloys from the factory. If the lacquer on a diamond-cut face chips, water creeps under it and the bare metal turns milky white, so don’t leave that kind of damage too long. We’ll look at your wheels and tell you honestly what each option involves.

Is windshield coating worth it for the Pune monsoon?

As an add-on, yes. A hydrophobic coating changes how water sits on the glass: instead of a smeared sheet, rain gathers into beads. At highway speeds, much of it blows clear before the wipers even sweep. It also makes dried bugs and grime easier to wash off. It is useful on the Expressway or the ghats in heavy rain, and on any night drive when the glass is streaky.

Be realistic about two things:

  • Wipers wear it. The front glass loses its coating faster than the side windows, so expect to top it up after some months of hard monsoon use.
  • It needs clean glass. The glass must be fully decontaminated before coating, and old, hardened wiper blades can judder on coated glass. Fresh blades fix that.

How we do it

  1. 01

    Assess

We check whether the haze is on the outside (restorable) or inside the lamp, and whether each wheel has cracks or bends that a refinish can't fix.

  2. 02

    Mask and sand

The paint around the lamp is taped off, and the oxidised layer is wet-sanded away with progressively finer grits.

  3. 03

    Polish

Machine polishing takes out the sanding marks and brings back clarity.

  4. 04

    Seal against UV

A UV-protective coat replaces the factory hard coat that sun and grit wore away. Cheap jobs skip this step.

  5. 05

    Repair and refinish the alloys

Kerb damage is sanded and filled. Then the wheel is primed, colour-matched and clear-coated, or refinished to suit its original finish.

  6. 06

    Hand over with care advice

We tell you how long to let the coatings cure and how to wash the lenses and wheels so they stay that way.

Frequently asked

Can yellow headlights be restored, or do I need new ones?

Most yellow or foggy headlights can be restored, because the damage sits on the outer surface of the lens. Restoration can't fix moisture inside the lamp, a burnt or peeling reflector, or a cracked or deeply crazed lens. If replacement is the right call, we'll tell you. Or, as people ask us, *headlight pivla zala, nava ghyava lagel ka?* Usually not.

How long does headlight restoration last?

It depends on the sealing. A polish-only job can turn hazy again within months in Pune's summer sun. A lens sealed with a UV-protective coat lasts much longer. Shaded parking or a clear headlight PPF helps further.

Will restored headlights be as bright as new?

Close, but not identical. AAA's 2018 tests found professional restoration brought a badly yellowed lens back to about 73% of a new lamp's output, up from 22%. That's a big improvement for night driving. A new OEM headlamp assembly is still the benchmark.

Can kerb-rashed alloy wheels be repaired?

Yes. Scrapes, kerb rash, corrosion and peeling lacquer are cosmetic and can be refinished. A bent rim or a cracked spoke is different: that's a safety issue for a wheel specialist, or a replacement. If we find either, we'll tell you before doing any cosmetic work.

Powder coating or paint for alloy wheels?

Powder coat is thicker and tougher, but the tyre has to come off, the old finish is fully stripped and the wheel is baked in an oven. Paint (primer, colour and clear coat) is easier to colour-match to the factory shade and suits smaller repairs. We'll recommend the finish that suits your wheel.

Can diamond-cut alloys be restored?

Yes, but the bright machined face has to be re-cut on a CNC lathe and then lacquered. Each cut removes a thin layer of metal, so a wheel can only be re-cut a limited number of times. We'll check the wheel's face and tell you whether a re-cut or a painted finish suits it.

What is windshield coating, and how long does it last?

It's a hydrophobic coating for glass that makes rain bead up and roll off, so you rely less on the wipers. How long it lasts depends on the product and how much you use the wipers, because the wipers slowly wear it away. Plan on a top-up after some months of monsoon use.
